William Li, MHC-LP

William (He/Him/His) is a bilingual psychotherapist in training, fluent in English and Mandarin Chinese. He offers individual therapy and couples therapy for adults. He specializes in anxiety, depression, relationships, LGBTQ+ issues, identity formation, and cross-cultural adjustment. He identifies as a gay, cisgender, Asian male. As a first-generation Chinese American immigrant, William has witnessed and experienced the unique challenges of cultural clashes and acculturation. He is committed to serving multicultural populations and advocating mental health equity for marginalized BIPOC groups.

William adopts a humanistic approach to therapy and views his clients within their bioecological contexts rather than through a strictly pathological lens. With a salutogenic framework, he seeks to highlight each client’s unique strengths and uncover their innate potential for resilience and self-empowerment. Because of his background in music education and his experience as a creative arts therapy intern at Mount Sinai Hospital, William firmly believes in the healing power of music. He integrates musical healing into other therapeutic modalities, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), accelerated experiential dynamic psychotherapy (AEDP), emotion-focused therapy (EFT), and psychodynamic theories. William strives to collaborate with his clients to create an individualized treatment plan and provide a comprehensive and holistic experience.

William firmly believes that a working alliance is a foundation for a solid therapeutic relationship and that therapy is a lived experience rather than an intellectual process. Since each person is the true expert on their life, William hopes to explore narratives collaboratively with the client rather than on the client’s behalf. He looks forward to being the listener, the participant, the facilitator, and the witness to the client’s journey of personal growth and self-discovery.

William graduated with a B.A. in Drama and Music from Vassar College. He is completing his M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Northwestern University.
