Frequently Asked Questions About Individual Therapy
What happens in an individual therapy session?
Each session is a confidential, one-on-one conversation with your therapist. Sessions typically last 45–60 minutes and happen weekly. You’ll talk about what’s been on your mind, whether it’s something current or rooted in the past.
Your therapist may help you:
Identify patterns or beliefs that no longer serve you
Build self-awareness and emotional regulation tools
Explore the impact of family, culture, and identity on your well-being
Set goals and make meaningful life changes
We draw from evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), EMDR, mindfulness, and relational therapy—always grounded in a client-centered, culturally aware lens.
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
If you’re even considering therapy, there’s a reason. You don’t need a diagnosis or a major life event to start. Many clients come to therapy simply because they want to feel better, think more clearly, or build healthier relationships.
You deserve a space where you can explore what’s going on inside without shame, urgency, or judgment.
Do you offer online therapy?
Yes. We offer telehealth sessions for clients anywhere in New York State. Online therapy is a flexible, accessible way to receive support from the comfort of your home or private space.
All of our online sessions are HIPAA-compliant and secure.
Is individual therapy culturally responsive?
At Therapy Brooklyn, cultural responsiveness is not an add on it’s foundational to our work. Our therapists hold space for the intersection of race, gender, sexuality, class, ability, and cultural background. We understand that healing doesn't happen in a vacuum and that the sociopolitical context you live in shapes your mental health.
We are a BIPOC-owned practice with a deep commitment to anti-oppressive, justice-oriented care. Our goal is to help you feel seen, respected, and empowered.
How much does individual therapy cost?
Cost depends on whether or not your individual therapist is in network or out of network. Most of our clinicians are in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield and Aetna. Some are in network with United Healthcare and Cigna. Out of network cost depends on the clinician that you see and ranges from $80-$250.
Does insurance cover individual therapy?
Most plans cover individual therapy. Our admin manager can support in verifying your insurance benefits.
