A class series that combines reflection and gentle yoga moment to restore and recharge.

Yoga for Stress and Anxiety

This restorative class offers gentle movements and meditation, focused on calming emotional and physical impacts of stress and anxiety. Classes will involve deep stretching and releasing tension in hips, shoulders, and back.

Themes of classes include:

  • Self-compassion

  • Loving kindness for self and others

  • Gratitude

  • Connecting with your inner strength

  • Finding balance

  • Exploring energy blockages

  • Inviting stillness

  • Examining your gifts

Research shows that yoga, which is a physical mindfulness practice, relieves symptoms of anxiety, depression, and trauma, by activating the parasympathetic nervous system, which controls our ‘rest and digest’ response and induces relaxation by sending calming signals to the body and brain. The physical postures and stretching in this class facilitate a deep release in the connective tissue and muscles, alleviating areas of the body which hold tension and stress. 

Classes will include grounding/centering; restorative postures; gentle flowing movements; and a short debriefing. All levels welcome. Please indicate any physical limitations beforehand, as modifications are possible with every posture.

Class will be held virtually and require a yoga mat or soft ground area, 2-3 pillows, and a blanket.

Facilitator

Nira Shah, LMHC

The facilitator is Nira Shah, a psychotherapist (LMHC) and yoga instructor. Nira has experience in mental health and social work internationally and local to NYC. She believes that compassion and mindfulness are core components for personal growth and healing, and aims to bring accessibility to yoga and mental health care to marginalized communities.
